UMB Bank traces its origins to 1913, when it was founded as City Center Bank in Kansas City, Missouri. The bank became associated with the Kemper family in 1918 and expanded over the following decades, developing from a local institution into a regional banking organization. Today, UMB Bank, National Association, operates as a subsidiary of UMB Financial Corporation, providing personal, commercial, institutional, and wealth management services.

A major milestone came on January 31, 2025, when UMB Financial Corporation completed its acquisition of Heartland Financial USA, expanding its banking footprint from 8 to 13 states. The transaction brought several regional banking brands into UMB, including Arizona Bank & Trust, Citywide Banks, and Bank of Blue Valley. On October 16, 2025, UMB completed the systems and brand conversion, integrating the former Heartland banks under the UMB name.

Expansion in Utah

UMB established a presence in Utah through commercial banking before developing its retail branch network. Its operations expanded to include commercial lending, treasury management, fund services, and corporate trust services, supporting businesses and institutional clients in the state.

In January 2026, UMB opened its first Utah full-service retail branch at 911 E. Fort Union Boulevard in Midvale. The bank also operates commercial banking centers in Midvale and Salt Lake City. Its Utah presence now combines consumer banking with commercial and institutional financial services, although its retail branch network remains limited to Midvale.

UMB Bank has grown from a Kansas City institution founded in 1913 into a regional banking organization operating under UMB Financial Corporation. Its acquisition of Heartland Financial USA in 2025 expanded its banking footprint and strengthened its presence across multiple U.S. markets. In Utah, UMB combines commercial banking operations in Salt Lake City and Midvale with a full-service retail branch in Midvale, which opened in January 2026.

The bank offers checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit, credit cards, personal loans, mortgages, and home equity financing. Its business services include deposit accounts, commercial lending, treasury management, and payment solutions. UMB’s combination of personal, business, and institutional financial services reflects its broader regional banking model and developing presence in Utah.

Columbia Bank’s history reflects the combination of 2 established Pacific Northwest banking institutions. Umpqua Bank, founded in 1953 in Roseburg, Oregon, expanded across the western United States, while the former Columbia Bank, based in Washington, developed its own regional banking network. In 2023, their parent companies, Umpqua Holdings Corporation and Columbia Banking System, Inc., completed a merger. The former Columbia Bank merged into Umpqua Bank, which continued operating under the Umpqua name, with Columbia Banking System as its parent company.

In 2025, Umpqua Bank officially changed its name to Columbia Bank, followed by the acquisition of Pacific Premier Bancorp, expanding the organization’s presence across western markets. Today, Columbia Bank operates as a subsidiary of Columbia Banking System, Inc., headquartered in Tacoma, Washington, while the bank maintains its corporate headquarters in Lake Oswego, Oregon. The institution operates across 8 western states, providing personal banking, commercial lending, treasury management, and wealth management services.

The bank operates as part of BMO Financial Group, the broader corporate name used for Bank of Montreal and its subsidiaries and business lines. BMO Bank’s U.S. roots trace back to 1882, when Norman Wait Harris founded N.W. Harris & Co. in Chicago. The business later became Harris Bank and was acquired by Bank of Montreal in 1984, establishing the foundation for BMO’s modern U.S. retail banking operations.

BMO expanded substantially through later acquisitions, including Marshall & Ilsley and Bank of the West, which BMO acquired in 2023. That same year, the bank simplified its consumer-facing brand from BMO Harris Bank to BMO. Today, BMO Bank N.A. is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, and operates a multistate branch network that includes 5 full-service branches in Utah. Utah residents can also access eligible BMO checking, savings, CDs, credit cards, mortgages, business banking, and digital banking services.

History and Expansion in Utah

BMO’s presence in Utah traces through Bank of the West, which established the branch network that BMO later inherited. Bank of the West’s Utah story initially appeared set to begin in 2000, when its parent, BancWest Corporation, agreed to acquire 68 branches from Zions Bancorporation and First Security Corporation, including 60 in Utah and 8 in Idaho. The branches represented about $2.1 billion in deposits and were being divested as part of the proposed Zions–First Security merger. However, that merger was later terminated, and because the branch sale depended on its completion, the transaction did not close.

Bank of the West ultimately established its Utah presence in 2004 through BancWest’s acquisition of Community First Bankshares, Inc., a Fargo, North Dakota-based holding company whose Community First National Bank operated branches in Utah and 11 other states. BancWest completed the $1.2 billion acquisition on November 1, 2004, and Community First National Bank was subsequently merged into Bank of the West and rebranded. The acquisition gave Bank of the West an established retail banking presence in Utah as part of a broader expansion across the western and midwestern United States.

BMO acquired Bank of the West from BNP Paribas on February 1, 2023, substantially expanding BMO’s presence across the western United States. Bank of the West branches and customer accounts were converted to the BMO brand and systems later that year, bringing its Utah locations into the BMO network. Today, BMO operates 5 full-service branches in Utah in Cottonwood Heights, Layton, Riverton, Salt Lake City, and Sandy.

D.L. Evans Bank was founded in 1904 in Albion, Idaho, by David Lloyd Evans and a group of southern Idaho businessmen. The bank began as a community institution serving local residents, farmers, and businesses, and it remained family-owned as it gradually expanded beyond its original market.

A major step in that expansion came in 1979, when the bank opened a branch in Burley. Burley later became the bank’s headquarters and a central base for its continued growth across southern Idaho.

D.L. Evans Bank expanded into Utah in 2018 with the opening of its first branch in Tremonton. Since then, it has grown its Utah footprint to include branches in Brigham City, Layton, Logan, Murray, Orem, South Ogden, and Tremonton, extending its presence from northern Utah into the Salt Lake Valley and Utah County.

Today, D.L. Evans Bank remains a family-owned regional community bank serving customers across Idaho and Utah. Its growth has expanded the bank well beyond its original Albion roots while retaining an emphasis on local banking relationships and community-based service.

It was founded in Seattle in 1917 as Ballard Savings and Loan and became Washington Federal Savings and Loan in 1958 as its operations expanded. In 2019, the institution adopted the WaFd Bank name—pronounced “WaFed”—to create a clearer banking identity and reduce confusion with the federal government in Washington, D.C. This profile covers its history, presence in Utah, customer service, and main consumer and business products.

Expansion

WaFd Bank traces its history to 1917, when local business owners founded Ballard Savings and Loan Association in Seattle. The institution was established to help residents save money and obtain financing for homeownership.

In 1935, the organization converted from a state-chartered association to a federal savings and loan. In 1958, it adopted the Washington Federal name.

Over the following decades, Washington Federal expanded through branch openings, mergers, and acquisitions across the western United States. This growth transformed it from a Seattle-area savings and loan into a regional bank offering consumer deposits, mortgages, commercial banking, and business services.

The shorter WaFd Bank name, pronounced “WaFed,” became the bank’s public-facing brand in 2019. The holding company became WaFd, Inc. in 2023, and the operating bank formally changed its legal name to WaFd Bank in 2025.

Today, WaFd Bank operates more than 200 branches across 9 western states with a strong presence in the Pacific Northwest states of Washington and Oregon.

Expansion in Utah

Washington Federal entered Utah in 1993 through the acquisition of First Federal Savings Bank of Utah. The transaction established the bank’s presence in the state and added branches serving communities along the Wasatch Front and in other parts of Utah.

Its Utah operations initially reflected the institution’s traditional focus on savings and residential lending. Over time, the bank expanded its local services to include checking accounts, savings products, credit cards, business banking, commercial lending, and digital banking.

WaFd Bank currently operates 9 Utah branches in Draper, Holladay, Layton, Logan, Murray, Price, and Salt Lake City. Its presence includes locations along the Wasatch Front as well as branches in northern and eastern Utah.

Conclusion

WaFd Bank has grown from a Seattle savings and loan founded in 1917 into a regional bank serving communities across the western United States. The institution operated for decades under the Washington Federal name before adopting the WaFd Bank brand, pronounced “WaFed,” as part of its transition into a broader commercial banking organization.

Its Utah presence began in 1993 through the acquisition of First Federal Savings Bank of Utah. Today, WaFd Bank operates branches in Draper, Holladay, Layton, Logan, Murray, Price, and Salt Lake City, giving it a presence along the Wasatch Front as well as in northern and eastern Utah.

WaFd Bank’s core services include personal checking and savings accounts, CDs, credit cards, digital banking, business checking, business lending, treasury management, merchant services, and commercial financing. Its current consumer lending lineup is more limited, and the bank is no longer accepting new home-financing applications, although it continues to service existing mortgages and home equity accounts.

Overall, WaFd Bank may appeal to Utah customers who prefer a regional bank with local branches, traditional deposit products, and a broad business banking platform. Fees, rates, eligibility requirements, and product availability can change, so customers should confirm current terms directly with WaFd Bank before opening an account or applying for credit.
