Which Credit Unions Have the Most Branches in Utah?

Utah residents who prefer in-person banking may want to know which credit unions provide the most physical branch access across the state. This ranking identifies the credit unions with the most branches in Utah based on qualifying full-service locations operated by each institution.

The ranking measures physical presence—not assets, membership, popularity, rates, account quality, or overall value. It includes active Utah branches where members can receive regular banking services while excluding ATMs, standalone interactive teller machines, shared branches operated by other credit unions, and locations without regular member service.

Having more branches can make in-person banking more convenient, but it does not automatically make a credit union better. Membership eligibility, account features, fees, rates, digital tools, service, and geographic fit can also matter. For recommendations based on a broader set of factors, see UtahFi’s Best Credit Unions in Utah guide.

This ranking covers credit unions only. For a separate comparison of bank locations, see UtahFi’s Top 10 Banks With the Most Branches in Utah.

UtahFi reviewed this information on September 16, 2026. The primary NCUA branch dataset reports information as of June 30, 2026. The NCUA prepared the file used for this ranking on August 24, 2026. UtahFi also checked official credit-union branch locators on September 16, 2026, to identify openings, closures, duplicate records, and other changes not fully reflected in the quarterly data.

Granite Credit Union ranks 7th with 14 qualifying Utah branches. Deseret First, Security Service, and Chartway each have 13 qualifying branches. Deseret First and Security Service each serve 13 Utah cities across 5 counties and 13 distinct ZIP codes, so alphabetical order determines their positions. Chartway ranks 10th because its 13 branches serve 12 Utah cities.

UtahFi used the NCUA Credit Union and Corporate Call Report Data, including the Credit Union Branch Information file, as the primary source. Official credit-union branch locators were checked to identify openings, closures, duplicate records, and other changes not fully reflected in the quarterly data. The ranking includes federally insured credit unions with at least 1 qualifying Utah branch, including federal- and state-chartered institutions. Privately insured credit unions are not included.

We counted active full-service branches operated by each credit union, including member-facing main offices and qualifying in-store branches. We excluded ATMs, standalone interactive teller machines, shared branches operated by other credit unions, administrative offices, loan and mortgage offices, drive-through-only facilities, and other locations without regular branch service.

Credit unions are ranked using the following order:

Qualifying Utah branches: The credit union with more branches ranks higher.

Utah cities served: If branch totals are tied, the credit union serving more cities ranks higher.

Utah counties served: If the branch and city totals remain tied, the credit union serving more counties ranks higher.

Distinct Utah ZIP codes served: If the county totals are also tied, the credit union serving more ZIP codes ranks higher.

Alphabetical order: This is used only if the branch, city, county, and ZIP-code totals all remain tied.

The complete methodology and institution-specific adjustments appear after the individual rankings.

Its branch network is concentrated primarily in Utah County, where the credit union was founded and maintains its strongest physical presence.

UCCU serves communities including Provo, Orem, American Fork, Lehi, Pleasant Grove, Payson, Spanish Fork, Springville, Saratoga Springs, and Vineyard. Outside Utah County, its network extends into Salt Lake County through locations in communities such as Draper, Herriman, Magna, Salt Lake City, Sandy, and Taylorsville. It also has branches in Heber City and Nephi.

How We Counted Utah Credit Union Branches

UtahFi used the NCUA Call Report Quarterly Data as the main source for this ranking. UtahFi reviewed the information on September 16, 2026. The NCUA branch data reports information as of June 30, 2026. The NCUA prepared the file used for this ranking on August 24, 2026.

The ranking includes federally insured credit unions with qualifying Utah branches, including federal- and state-chartered institutions. Privately insured credit unions are not included. UtahFi also checked official credit-union branch locators to identify openings, closures, duplicate records, and other changes not fully reflected in the quarterly data.

Branches We Included

Active full-service branches operated by the credit union

Member-facing main offices that provide regular branch banking

Qualifying branches located inside stores or other retail locations

Locations We Did Not Include

ATMs

Standalone interactive teller machines that are not part of a full-service branch

Shared branches operated by another credit union

CO-OP Shared Branch locations that the ranked credit union does not operate

Online-only and telephone-banking records

Administrative and corporate offices without regular member service

Loan production offices

Mortgage offices

Drive-through-only facilities

Financial-advisor and investment offices

Upcoming locations that had not opened

Permanently closed or inactive locations

Other specialty locations that do not provide regular branch banking

Participation in a shared-branching network does not mean that every participating location belongs to the credit union. We counted only qualifying Utah branches operated by the institution being ranked.

How We Counted Cities and Handled Ties

Each Utah city was counted once for every credit union with at least one qualifying branch there. Different versions of the same city name, such as “Saint George,” “St George,” and “St. George,” were combined and counted as one city.

Credit unions were ranked using the following order:

Qualifying Utah branches: The credit union with more branches ranks higher.

Utah cities served: If branch totals are tied, the credit union serving more cities ranks higher.

Utah counties served: If the branch and city totals remain tied, the credit union serving more counties ranks higher.

Distinct Utah ZIP codes served: If the county totals are also tied, the credit union serving more ZIP codes ranks higher.

Alphabetical order: This is used only if the branch, city, county, and ZIP-code totals all remain tied.

Deseret First Credit Union and Security Service Federal Credit Union each have 13 qualifying Utah branches serving 13 cities, 5 counties, and 13 distinct ZIP codes. Because all 4 measures remain tied, alphabetical order places Deseret First ahead of Security Service. Chartway Credit Union also has 13 qualifying branches but ranks lower because it serves 12 Utah cities.

How We Counted Goldenwest Division Branches

USU Credit Union operates as a division of Goldenwest Credit Union. Qualifying Utah branches operated under the USU Credit Union name were counted as part of Goldenwest because they belong to the same federally insured credit union. They were not treated as a separate institution. Shared branches operated by other credit unions were excluded.

How We Counted Deseret First Credit Union

The June 30, 2026 NCUA branch data does not include Deseret First Credit Union’s Provo branch. Deseret First’s current official location directory identifies the Provo location at 695 E. 800 N. as an open branch that provides regular member services.

UtahFi therefore counted the officially listed Provo branch, bringing Deseret First’s total to 13 qualifying branches in 13 Utah cities. Shared branches and CO-OP ATMs appearing through Deseret First’s locator were not counted.

What the Ranking Shows

America First Credit Union Has Utah’s Largest Branch Network

America First Credit Union leads the ranking with 87 qualifying branches in 53 Utah cities. It has 13 more branches than Mountain America Credit Union, although both credit unions serve 53 cities. America First’s lead therefore comes from operating more branches within its Utah service area rather than serving more cities.

Utah-Based Credit Unions Dominate the Ranking

The first 8 credit unions in the ranking are headquartered in Utah: America First, Mountain America, Goldenwest, Utah Community Credit Union, Cyprus, Canyon View, Granite, and Deseret First. Security Service Federal Credit Union is headquartered in Texas, while Chartway Credit Union is headquartered in Virginia. Both operate multistate branch networks that include Utah.

Branch Count and City Coverage Are Different

Having more branches does not always mean serving more cities. America First and Mountain America both serve 53 Utah cities, but America First operates 13 more branches. Granite Credit Union operates 14 branches in 13 cities, while Deseret First and Security Service each operate 13 branches in 13 cities. Chartway also has 13 branches but serves 12 cities.

This difference shows whether a credit union concentrates multiple branches in some cities or distributes its locations across more communities.

More Branches Does Not Automatically Mean a Credit Union Is Better

This ranking measures only physical branch access in Utah. It does not compare account options, fees, rates, member service, digital tools, membership benefits, or other factors that may matter when choosing a credit union.

A credit union with fewer branches may still be a better match for someone who rarely needs in-person service or prefers its membership structure, products, or digital banking tools. For broader recommendations based on different financial needs, see our Best Credit Unions in Utah guide.

Branch Access Does Not Guarantee Membership Eligibility

Credit unions have membership requirements. Eligibility may depend on where a person lives, works, worships, or attends school, or on employment, military service, family relationships, religious affiliation, or membership in a qualifying organization.

A credit union may operate many branches in Utah without being open to everyone. Prospective members should confirm eligibility directly with the credit union before applying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the credit unions with the most branches in Utah?

America First Credit Union has the most qualifying Utah branches in this ranking, with 87 branches in 53 cities. This refers specifically to its physical branch network in Utah, not its assets, membership, products, or overall size.

Does this ranking include banks?

No. This ranking includes only federally insured credit unions with qualifying physical branches in Utah. Banks are covered separately in our Top 10 Banks With the Most Branches in Utah ranking.

Are shared branches counted?

Shared branches are counted only when the ranked credit union operates the location itself. We did not count branches operated by other credit unions, even when members of the ranked institution can complete transactions there through the CO-OP Shared Branch network or another shared-branching arrangement.

Are ATMs counted as branches?

No. ATMs and standalone interactive teller machines are not counted as branches. An ATM located at a qualifying full-service branch does not affect the branch count.

Can anyone join the credit unions in this ranking?

Not necessarily. Credit unions have membership requirements that may be based on geography, employment, military service, school attendance, religious affiliation, family relationships, or participation in an eligible organization. Eligibility should be confirmed directly with the credit union before applying.

How often does the NCUA update its branch data?

The NCUA publishes Call Report data quarterly. The reporting dates are generally March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31. Updated files are released after the NCUA processes the information submitted for each reporting period, so a recent opening or closure may not appear immediately.

How often does UtahFi update this ranking?

UtahFi reviews this ranking quarterly after updated NCUA data becomes available. We may update it sooner following a merger, acquisition, rebrand, major branch opening, closure, or other material change affecting the ranking.

In the early 1950s, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recognized that employees working in the Church Offices needed access to dedicated financial services. Keith Carroll was tasked with organizing the institution, which was officially founded on July 28, 1955, as LDS Church Office Credit Union. The credit union initially operated from Carroll’s desk and ended its first year with 196 members.

In 1974, Deseret First opened its first physical branch on North Temple in Salt Lake City. Membership expanded to employees throughout the Church organization and certain affiliated companies, leading to the name LDS Church Employees Credit Union. Its field of membership expanded again in 1984 to include members of the Church, and the institution officially adopted the name Deseret First Credit Union in 1986.

Deseret First continued expanding its membership and physical presence in subsequent decades. Membership surpassed 50,000 in 2006, and the credit union completed a larger operations center in West Valley City in 2018. Today, it serves more than 80,000 members through 13 Utah branches. Its community efforts include financial education and the separate Deseret First Charitable Foundation, which helps qualifying missionaries with essential supplies and provides education assistance to recently returned missionary students.

Introduction

A financial guide for Utah college students should help make everyday money decisions easier, whether you already live in Utah or recently moved here for school. Starting college often means managing money more independently for the first time, including tuition, housing, food, transportation, books, and everyday expenses while adjusting to campus life, a new city, or a new routine.

Some students stay close to home. Others move to places like Salt Lake City, Provo, Logan, Cedar City, Ogden, or St. George for school. No matter where a student is coming from, the financial pressure can feel similar: there are new costs, limited income, and a lot of decisions that can affect everyday life.

The good news is that student finances do not need to be complicated. Learning how to budget, avoid unnecessary fees, use credit carefully, and take advantage of available resources can help Utah college students build a stronger financial foundation during school and after graduation.

Understand Your Biggest College Costs

One of the easiest ways to lose control of money in college is to treat every expense the same. A better approach is to group your spending into a few major categories so you can quickly see where your money is going.

For most Utah college students, the main categories are housing, food, transportation, tuition and fees, books and supplies, and personal spending. Some of these costs are easier to predict, while others can change a lot from month to month.

A useful starting point is to divide your expenses into fixed costs and variable costs. Fixed costs are the bills that usually stay the same, such as rent, phone service, insurance, or a parking pass. Variable costs are the ones that can change more easily, such as groceries, eating out, gas, entertainment, and everyday purchases.

This matters because variable spending is often where students lose track of money. A few small purchases during the week may not seem serious, but they can add up quickly over a month.

For Utah students, the biggest pressure points often depend on lifestyle. A student living at home may spend less on housing but more on transportation. A student living near campus may face higher rent but lower commuting costs. Students who live at home may also see how broader household costs affect daily financial decisions, which is why it helps to understand the bigger picture in the Financial Guide for Utah Families.

The goal is to understand which categories affect your budget the most so you can make better decisions earlier.

Build a Simple Student Budget

After you understand your main cost categories, the next step is to give each one a place in your monthly plan. A budget does not need to be complicated to be useful. For most students, it works best when it is simple, realistic, and easy to update.

Start with your monthly income. That may include money from a part-time job, family support, scholarships used for living expenses, work-study, or other sources. Then list your regular expenses and estimate how much usually goes toward flexible categories like food, transportation, and personal spending.

A simple student budget often includes housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, phone, school supplies, personal spending, and savings. The goal is not to guess every dollar perfectly. The goal is to make sure your money has a basic structure before the month starts.

It also helps to track spending for at least a few weeks. Many students underestimate how much goes toward eating out, coffee, subscriptions, rideshares, and small impulse purchases. Those expenses may not look serious on their own, but they can quietly take money away from rent, groceries, or other essentials.

For Utah college students, a budget can also help compare tradeoffs more clearly. A student living at home may have lower rent but higher commuting costs. A student living near campus may spend more on housing but less on gas and parking. A budget makes those differences easier to see.

Having the right account setup can make everyday student life much easier. Most students need at least a checking account, and comparing different checking accounts in Utah can be a helpful way to see which options may offer lower fees, better digital tools, or easier access for everyday student banking.

Some may also want a savings account to set aside money for emergencies, future tuition costs, or other short-term goals.

When comparing options, pay attention to monthly fees, minimum balance requirements, ATM access, mobile banking features, and overdraft policies. A small fee may not seem like much at first, but repeated charges can add up over the semester.

Utah students may choose between local banks, Utah credit unions, national banks with branches in the state, and online banking options. The best fit often depends on where you live, how often you use cash, and whether branch access matters to you.

Students who prefer a more digital experience may also want to compare online options like Ally and SoFi alongside local banks and Utah credit unions. That can be especially useful for students who care more about mobile tools, online transfers, and app-based banking than regular branch access. Students who want a closer look can also compare Ally vs SoFi before deciding which digital option may fit their needs better.

If you are still comparing options, it helps to understand the difference between a bank vs credit union in Utah.

Use Credit Carefully

For many students, college is the first time they are offered a credit card or start thinking more seriously about borrowing. Used carefully, credit can help build a financial history. Used carelessly, it can become expensive very quickly.

A credit card is not extra income. It is borrowed money that usually needs to be paid back on time to avoid interest charges. Even a small balance can become harder to manage if it carries over from month to month.

That is why it helps to understand how interest works before taking on credit card debt. Many students focus only on the minimum payment, but the real cost can grow when balances stay unpaid for too long. Learning this early can help you avoid turning short-term spending into a longer-term financial problem.

A good starting habit is simple: only charge what you can realistically pay off. Building credit slowly and responsibly is usually better than trying to use too much credit too early.

Find Practical Ways to Save Money

Saving money in college does not always require major lifestyle changes. In many cases, a few small decisions repeated consistently can make a noticeable difference over the course of a semester.

One of the easiest ways to reduce pressure is to watch recurring costs. That includes subscriptions, convenience spending, food delivery, and small purchases that do not seem important in the moment but add up over time. Many students also save by buying used textbooks, sharing housing costs carefully, using student discounts, and making better use of campus resources before paying for outside alternatives.

Food is another category that can grow faster than expected. Eating out often, grabbing snacks on campus every day, or relying too much on convenience purchases can quietly increase monthly spending. Even small changes like planning meals ahead, bringing snacks, or cutting back on impulse food spending can help.

For students in Utah, transportation choices can also affect the budget. A student who drives regularly may spend much more on gas, parking, insurance, and maintenance than expected. Others may be able to save by living closer to campus, carpooling, or using available transit options.

Saving money in college is often less about perfection and more about awareness. The more clearly you understand your habits, the easier it becomes to make changes that actually last.

Use Part-Time Income Wisely

Many students in Utah work while attending school, and that income can be helpful when it is tied to a plan. A part-time job can help cover rent, groceries, gas, books, and other regular expenses, but it usually works best when the money is used intentionally instead of disappearing into unplanned spending.

One practical approach is to divide each paycheck into a few basic categories, such as essentials, savings, and personal spending. That can make it easier to cover immediate needs while still setting aside something for unexpected costs.

Part-time income can also help reduce stress when it supports the basics first. For some students, that may mean paying for transportation or food. For others, it may mean building a small emergency cushion so one surprise expense does not throw off the rest of the month.

Working during college can be valuable, but balance still matters. The goal is not only to make money. It is to support your education and make student life more manageable without creating new problems somewhere else.

Know What Help May Be Available

Some students assume that if money feels tight, the only solution is to borrow more. In reality, there may be other forms of support worth exploring first.

Depending on the school and the situation, Utah college students may have access to scholarships, grants, work-study opportunities, emergency aid, food support, financial wellness resources, and campus-based services. Many colleges and universities also offer help through financial aid offices, student success centers, academic advisors, and other support programs designed to help students manage short-term financial pressure.

Students who want to better understand the 2026-27 FAFSA, grants, work-study, and federal student loans can also review the official resources available through Federal Student Aid.

Students who are new to Utah should also take time to learn what support exists on their specific campus and in the surrounding community. Even students who grew up in Utah may overlook resources that are already available through their school.

Looking into available help early can make a big difference. It is often easier to solve a financial problem when it is still small than to wait until it starts affecting housing, transportation, class performance, or everyday stress.

Another is overspending in small amounts, especially on food, entertainment, delivery, subscriptions, and convenience purchases that do not seem serious in the moment.

Some students also open accounts without paying enough attention to fees, ATM access, minimum balance requirements, or overdraft policies.
