Expansion in Utah

The history of Wells Fargo in Utah comes full circle within the state. It began providing messenger services between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles in 1855. It was not until 1865 that Wells Fargo established its first banking branch in Utah. By 1888, the company was already operating 127 branches statewide.

However, in 1905, Wells Fargo sold its Utah operations to Walker Brothers Bank. Walker Bank later merged in 1981 with First Interstate Bank of Los Angeles. In 1996, Wells Fargo acquired First Interstate Bank, marking its return to Utah.

Finally, in 2000, Wells Fargo acquired First Security Bank from the Eccles family. At the time, First Security Bank was the seventh-largest bank in the United States and was headquartered in Salt Lake City. Through these acquisitions, Wells Fargo became firmly established as one of Utah’s leading banks.
