Utah Community Credit Union (UCCU) Overview

Utah Community Credit Union (UCCU) was founded in 1956 by seven employees of Brigham Young University (BYU) under the name BYU Federal Credit Union. Due to the lack of resources at the time, the credit union operated inside a university building, and according to historical accounts, cash was even stored in a bathtub. Today, UCCU is the fourth-largest credit union in the state of Utah, with 300+ employees and 200,000+ members. Most of its members are located in Utah County. Who Can Become a Member of UCCU?

Utah Community Credit Union is a member-owned financial cooperative, which means access to its accounts and loans is limited to individuals who qualify under its field of membership. Eligibility is based on connection, not residency alone.

In general, membership may be available to individuals with one or more of the following connections:

Employment-based eligibility

  • Individuals whose employer participates in or is connected to UCCU’s field of membership

Family or household eligibility

  • Immediate family members or household members of an existing UCCU member
  • This pathway allows membership to extend across generations and households

Organizational or association eligibility

  • Individuals affiliated with certain organizations or associations that qualify under UCCU’s membership guidelines

To activate membership, applicants are typically required to open a Share Savings account with a minimum $5 deposit, which represents ownership in the credit union. Once established, members gain access to UCCU’s full suite of financial products and services.

Because eligibility pathways can change, prospective members should confirm current requirements directly with UCCU before applying.

Conclusion

Utah Community Credit Union was founded in 1956 as BYU Federal Credit Union by employees of Brigham Young University and has grown steadily into one of Utah’s largest credit unions. Over time, UCCU has expanded its branch network, service areas, and digital banking capabilities, reflecting its long-term presence and role within Utah’s financial landscape.

Today, UCCU offers a broad range of financial products, including checking and savings accounts, consumer loans, credit cards, and home financing options. Access to these services is available to individuals who qualify for membership through employment connections, family or household relationships, or organizational affiliations. For those who meet the eligibility requirements, Utah Community Credit Union provides a member-owned alternative to traditional banks with a wide selection of personal financial services.
