History and Expansion
Horizon Credit Union was founded on April 6, 1956, when 12 people met at Davis High School to establish a credit union for employees of the Davis County School District. The new institution was incorporated as Davis School District Employees Credit Union, with Davis High School serving as its original home. At an organizational meeting later that month, 16 original members made deposits totaling just $295.
The credit union gradually expanded alongside its membership. In 1963, Horizon hired Neale Davis as its first full-time employee. During his 30 years with the credit union, assets grew from approximately $600,000 to $30 million, while the main office moved from a small home in Farmington to larger facilities. Branches in Bountiful and Clearfield began opening in 1982 and 1983, respectively, and additional locations were later established in Kaysville and West Point. The former Bountiful-area presence is now represented by Horizon’s South Branch in Woods Cross.
In 2026, Horizon Credit Union marked its 70th anniversary. The credit union now reports more than 13,000 members and approximately $185 million in assets, with five physical branches across Davis County. Horizon also remains involved in northern Utah communities through local partnerships and programs such as Warm the Soles, which has provided new shoes to underserved Utah children and youth for more than 20 years.

Who Can Join Horizon Credit Union?
Horizon Credit Union has a relatively flexible membership structure built around existing members and several participating organizations. Unlike some Utah credit unions, Horizon does not currently advertise membership simply based on living in a particular county.
- Counties: No general county-based membership path is currently listed
- Family: Family or household members of an existing Horizon Credit Union member can qualify
- Employers and organizations: Eligibility is available through participating organizations, including Davis Education Foundation, Lifetime Products, Davis Technical College, and Davis School District
- Other paths: Individuals who do not qualify through family or one of the listed organizations may still become eligible by joining the Financial Fitness Association at no cost
Horizon also states that spouses of individuals who died while within the credit union’s field of membership may qualify. A $5 deposit opens the required Share Savings account and establishes membership. Prospective members should verify their eligibility online, by calling Horizon Credit Union, or by visiting a branch.
