About This Calculator
The Auto Loan Calculator estimates your monthly payment, total interest, and loan cost using your vehicle price, down payment, trade-in value, taxes, fees, interest rate, and loan term.
If you still owe money on your trade-in, enter that balance too. The calculator accounts for positive or negative trade-in equity when estimating the amount financed.
Start with the editable example or enter your own numbers. Results update automatically, with a chart showing your remaining balance and a year-by-year breakdown of principal and interest.
How to Use the Auto Loan Calculator
- Enter the vehicle price before taxes and fees.
- Add your down payment and, if applicable, your trade-in value and remaining loan balance.
- Enter the applicable sales tax rate and any fees you plan to finance.
- Add your estimated interest rate and select a loan term.
- Review your monthly payment, total interest, and remaining balance over time.
Understanding Your Results
Estimated Monthly Payment is the amount you would pay each month under the calculator’s fixed-rate assumptions.
Amount Financed includes the vehicle price, estimated taxes, fees, and any negative trade-in equity, minus your down payment and trade-in allowance.
Total Interest Paid shows the estimated borrowing cost over the selected term. A longer term can reduce your monthly payment while increasing the total interest you pay.
Total Loan Cost combines your down payment and total loan payments. Trade-in equity is reflected in the amount financed. This figure excludes insurance, fuel, maintenance, and other ownership expenses.
Before You Choose an Auto Loan
Compare the monthly payment and total interest together. Try different loan terms and down payments to see how each choice changes your results.
To put a potential car payment in the context of your income, use the Utah Paycheck Calculator to estimate your take-home pay. If you are also planning a home purchase, the Utah Mortgage Calculator can help you estimate another major monthly expense.
Use the calculator as a planning tool, then compare your estimate with the lender’s written offer. Actual payments can differ because of lender fees, payment timing, rounding, and the way APR is calculated.
Calculator Assumptions and Limitations
Estimates only. This calculator assumes a fixed rate, equal monthly payments, and all entered taxes and fees financed. APR is used as the loan interest rate; lender fees included in an actual APR can change the payment.
Sales tax is estimated on vehicle price minus trade-in value (minimum $0), assuming a qualifying trade-in in the same transaction. Other Fees are added after tax; include any applicable tax on fees in that amount.
The 7.25% sales tax rate is an editable example, not a location-based rate. See Utah’s vehicle sales tax guidance for more information.
Insurance, fuel, maintenance, and other ownership costs are excluded. This calculator does not provide a loan offer or guarantee approval.
