WaFd Bank Announces $3.9 Billion Merger With EverBank
WaFd Bank parent WaFd, Inc. and EverBank Financial Corp announced a $3.9 billion reverse-merger transaction expected to close in early 2027, subject to regulatory approval, WaFd shareholder approval, and other closing conditions.
At the holding-company level, EverBank Financial Corp will merge into WaFd, Inc. WaFd will remain the surviving corporation but change its name to EverBank Financial Corp and trade under the ticker EVBK. At the bank level, WaFd Bank will merge into EverBank, N.A., which will remain the surviving bank.
Why it matters: WaFd currently operates 9 branches in Utah, so the merger could eventually bring those locations under EverBank, N.A., although the companies have not yet detailed the timing of any branch rebranding.

Chime to Acquire Stride Bank for $590 Million
Chime agreed to acquire Stride Bank, N.A. for $590 million in cash. After closing, Stride will become Chime Bank, N.A. and operate as a wholly owned Chime subsidiary.
The transaction is expected to close during the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. Stride currently lists a location in Downtown Salt Lake City.
Why it matters: The acquisition could eventually bring a Chime-branded national bank presence to Utah through Stride’s existing Salt Lake City location.

Mercury Bank Receives Conditional FDIC Approval
Financial-technology company Mercury received conditional FDIC approval for its proposed Mercury Bank, N.A. The company is currently a fintech, not a bank, and provides banking products through partner banks, primarily Choice Financial Group and Column N.A.
If authorized to open, the new institution would operate as a full-service online national bank headquartered in Salt Lake City, serving small and midsize businesses and individual consumers without physical branches. It previously received preliminary conditional charter approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency but must still satisfy the remaining regulatory and pre-opening requirements.
Why it matters: If it opens, Mercury Bank would add another technology-focused national bank headquartered in Utah.

LoanPro Launches AI Tool to Speed Up Loan Servicing

Mortgage Rates Top 7% as Utah Affordability Remains Strained
Daily mortgage-rate trackers showed the average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage moving above 7% on September 11 for the first time in more than a year. Mortgage News Daily reported 7.08%, while a U.S. News measure based on Zillow data reached 7.104%.
The weekly Freddie Mac average remained below that threshold at 6.76%, illustrating how mortgage-rate measures can differ by source and timing. Deseret News connected the increase to Utah’s continuing housing-affordability challenges, including high home prices and homeowners’ reluctance to give up lower-rate mortgages.
Why it matters: Higher mortgage rates can increase monthly payments and make buying a home even more difficult for Utah households already facing elevated housing costs.
